Mental health and suicide prevention

This may look long but I appreciate you taking the time to read.

I enjoy a good time, to say the least. I’ve always enjoyed drinking and partying. For those who don’t know me, committing to being sober for 12 months may not sound too outrageous, for those who do, know that this is one of the biggest decisions i’ve made in my adult life.

At the end of 2018 I decided I would start the new year off by setting a goal for myself. After a recent trip to the doctor about some stomach/gut issues I was told that consuming any alcohol l will exacerbate my already existing issues. With this in mind, I decided my first goal for 2019 was to be sober for ONE month. Today is the end of that month.

A few days ago I overheard a couple of people having a conversation about mens mental health and statistic surrounding suicide. I couldn’t help but rudely listen to their conversation… I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and I almost didn’t believe what they were saying was correct. I jumped on my phone and did my own research, sure enough- they were right, which is what has brought me here.

* Over 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt every year,
* 1 in 6 men are taking their own life.
* Male suicide has also increased by 9% last year.
* 3,128 people committed suicide last year and 75% of them were male.
* Men are three times more likely to take their own life.
* Suicide is the leading cause of death in men between the ages of 15 to 44.
* More men die of suicide than car accidents.
* Finally, suicide is the 10th highest cause of death among men, coming just after prostate, bowel and lymph cancer.

How did I not know this? Why isn’t this a conversation amongst friends? Why isn’t this spoken about in the media? Reading this made me feel sick and I immediately felt obliged to help. These men (and women of course) who are struggling with mental health need to be taken care of so they don’t turn into another grim statistic. I knew I had found my next goal.

I decided to share with my friends and family on social media that I would be going sober for an entire year in aim to help raise awareness and funds for mens mental health. The response I had from both men and women was crazy, I was receiving messages from lots of people I didn’t know congratulating me on what a great idea this was.

With my main objective to raise awareness, there is little more depth as to why I am doing this. I am also doing this for myself. I feel alcohol is the leading cause of a lot of bad things in my own life, bad decisions, sabotaged relationships, financial pressure from expensive weekend benders and lastly, the anxiety and depression I’m left with afterwards. It all starts with booze.

This is huge decision for me, but the amount of feedback i’ve had has given me confidence that I can do this. Im doing it for myself, I’m doing it for the people that are too afraid to speak up, I’m doing this for the people who are going through a dark time and think that no one cares and I am doing this for all those people who have lost someone they love to suicide. (I’m sure we are all have someone on our mind right now).

Maybe there will be people out there who will see this and think, “Trent loves running a muck, if he can go 12 months no drinking, maybe I can go one month”.. Even if this just helps ONE person struggling, I will have achieved my goal. Who knows, maybe that one month off will change their life just like this year will change mine.

Any donations big or small are appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read and even if you don’t decide to leave a donation, I hope you leave informed.

1 down, 11 to go. Wish me luck.
