Join me for Movember 2020

2020 has been a big year of curveballs for us all. I’ve seen first-hand the impact on the men in my life – from my dad to my partner, to my brother and my mates. I’ve also listened to hundreds of stories. Each and every one serves as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do, and why it’s so important.

Stories like that of 39-year-old Simon Hilton, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer first at age 17, and then again two years ago. He was able to connect with the guys from Movember’s True North community when he needed them most. Or Melbourne tram driver Bruce Whalley, who is living with prostate cancer, and determined to make every person he comes across aware of the disease (and brighten their day while he’s at it). And Dan Price, who came close to taking his own life in 2014, and is now a Community Ambassador for Movember, sharing his story to help others lead happier, healthier lives.

Each of these Mo Bros has made me more determined than ever to make real change, but I can’t do it alone.

Men’s health is in crisis and we need all hands on deck. In Australia,

  • Men die on average 4 years earlier than women.
  • Suicide is the leading cause of death among men aged 15-44.
  • 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before they’re 85.
  • And testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men.
We’ve been tackling these health issues since 2003 by funding game-changing scientific breakthroughs, innovative cancer trials and treatments, and mental health and suicide prevention programs that have saved and changed lives.

This year, despite the world around us shifting at breakneck speed, I’ve had even more reasons to be proud – including when we piloted surf therapy sessions in bushfire-ravaged Mallacoota. We then quickly pivoted in response to COVID-19 to deliver Movember Conversations, a new online mental health tool to help our community through these tough times and beyond. We couldn’t have done any of it without the life-changing funds raised by our incredible Mo Bros and Mo Sisters each year.

I could name a million more reasons to join me, but I know nothing unites people more than bonding over a newly sprouted Mo. And this year, it might just be the most important Mo you ever grow.

Whether you Grow, take on the Move challenge, get your mates together for a virtual event or create your own challenge (we call it Mo Your Own Way), just know that you’ll be making a real difference in the lives of real men. Havin’ fun, doin’ good. And I know we could all do with a little fun after the year that’s been.

So, can I count on you to sign up? To get on board for Movember 2020, head here.

Thank you and Mo on,

Rachel Carr
