Alright legends, it's that time of year again - the mo is making a comeback!

This photo is of a young Shane from my days at Bidwill Public School. Hiding behind those blue eyes and fake smile (not to mention the incredible hair!) was a boy who was silently struggling.

You see my childhood was especially difficult: dad was gone from the age of 3; I grew up on the tough streets of Mt Druitt with a single mum and no money; the kid in this photo often went to school with holes in my shoes and no lunch; I was bullied as a child because I was shy, poor and developed a stutter.

I was constantly told I wasn't good enough and would never amount to anything in life. But it only takes one person to believe in you to succeed - that person was my mum. Sadly, my mother passed away when I was in my 20's and I was devastated - she was my strength and inspiration.

So mental health affected me from a young age but it would be years later before I understood what I was going through and how to deal with it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a work in progress. There are battles I continue to fight, both physically and mentally and I still have good and bad days.

That's my motivation for Movember, to raise awareness for others who are fighting similar battles.

The suicide rate in this country is way too high - we lose nearly 9 people every day to suicide, the majority of those are men. But it's not just those that take their own lives - it's the families and friends that are left behind as well. I want to do everything I can to help reduce the rate of suicide and lessen the impact it has on loved ones.

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men's health, and this Movember I'm joining them. Together we can make a difference for men's health – in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Help me stop men dying too young.

So this month, I'm growing the mo and putting it out there to raise a few bucks - and some awareness - for the legends out there who are struggling in silence.

If you can chuck in a few dollars, it'd mean the world to me. If not, do me a favour and just check in on a mate - that matters just as much.

Remember, we can all make a difference - but if we work together, we can literally change lives :-)
