Men's health

At the start of 2021, I watched my once strong and independent dad lose his battle with liver cancer.

It was the most emotionally challenging time I have ever been through. Watching my dad become so dependent on others around him just to help him with the basic things, like having a shower or going to the toilet, was the toughest thing to witness.

My dad survived stomach cancer two years before and our family were hoping he'd pull through it this time too. But this time was different. He was diagnosed too late and it was too risky for doctors to treat him as the cancer was advanced.

We were told at Christmas time in 2020, that he only had three months to live. We tried to make the most of what little time we had with him.

He was stubborn right up until the end, he didn't want to admit that he couldn't move without our help or that he needed painkillers to give him some relief. I know men tend to find it difficult to talk about their health issues and are less likely to have regular medical check-ups. But this has to change.

I fully support the intent of the Movember Foundation and I hope that by being involved it will prompt the men in my life to be courageous, comfortable and proactive about addressing their health concerns immediately rather than leaving it before it’s too late.
