Mental health and suicide prevention

For the month of November, I’m committing to an hour of exercise every day with a different member of my community — using that time to check in, talk, and share the load. It’s about movement, connection, and conversation.

This idea came from personal experience. I’ve lost multiple people in my life to suicide — including my mum when I was seven, and my best mate Tristan in 2018.

Tristan and I were housemates and close friends back in Adelaide. After I moved interstate to chase work after uni, we drifted a little. One night, not long after, we were out celebrating my graduation — laughing, telling stories, and catching up late into the morning. I didn’t know he was struggling. When I said goodbye the next day, he was crying. I gave him a hug and told him I’d call. That was the last time I saw him.

Every hour, around 60 men around the world die by suicide. That number represents sons, brothers, fathers, mates — people like Tristan — and it’s one of the reasons that Movember exists.

MO23: Went to the driving range with my mate, Jason, as part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 different blokes throughout the month of November. Jason is up there with the most dedicated MoBros I have ever met and full to the brim with lots of wisdom about men’s health, particularly in the mental health space. Variety is the spice of life (if that’s how that saying goes?!), so in order to ensure his cup stays filled he is working on mastering the art of boundary setting, so that he can make time to do the things he loves intentionally, with the people he loves, to keep him in a healthy headspace. What a guy.

MO22: Got in a few (attempted on my part) swings with a mate from work, Tom, as part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 different blokes throughout Movember. A cool operator in a good headspace, not all check ins = load to be shared but definitely create the space to talk and sparks encouragement for others to check in with their mates.

MO22: As part of my 30 day challenge of connecting with 30 different blokes in my community to exercise, I got in a run + walk+ a couple of home brews with my mate Ziggy. Ziggy is recently a second time dad with a great mindset about the importance of investing time to look after his physical health, so that he can show up as his best self for his partner and children. I hope to be like Ziggy when I become a dad!

MO21: As part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 blokes over the month of November, I had a kick with one of my team mates from Footscray Rangers, Rupert. Having both in recent years dealt with close loss, we talked a lot about the importance of community and having healthy outlets when processing those events. I’m pleased to hear he’s in a great place with such healthy support systems in position.

MO19: Got an afternoon climb at the bouldering gym with Niels after work (I swear we didn’t just go to the pub!). Niels is someone I work closely with, shares good wisdom (roses grow in crud). We got to talk about the highs and lows of recent times and our tactics to navigate those. A very wholesome hangout!

MO19: Got in a morning run with my mate, Paris, as part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 different blokes in my community. Despite being good mates for over a year now, neither of us really had the opportunity to open up about our connections to Movembers cause areas of focus. After sharing the load of loss, it really did feel like some weight had been lifted and our friendship furthered. Love you dude.

MO18: bit behind on these posts as it’s been a crazy week, but I did a walk and talk with Will (father of two cute kittens!) as part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 blokes in my community. Very insightful conversations talking about the importance of having multiple tools in your kit to deal with the different stresses root causes (e.g. work and personal life) that come from life to keep on top of your mental health.

Keep doing the good work. The more visibility we have on men supporting men, the more change we'll have of normalising vulnerability and removing stigma and shame.

MO17: I got in a run + bit of a walk in with one of my mates from football, community servant and entrepreneur in the making, Tungy as part of my challenge of connecting with 30 different men for exercise over the 30 days of November. A steady head, Tungy talked about his upcoming leap of faith to start his own business on the side of his job and trying to live his life without regrets. Can’t wait to try his Asian fusion pizza at one of the local markets when he launches!

MO13: Walk and Talk with my Uncle Leigh as part of my 30 day challenge of exercising with 30 different blokes in my community. While connecting, my uncle talked about his challenges as a shift working firefighter and prioritising his health but emphasised the importance of making sure to do so, so that he can show up for his job and his family as his best self. Inspirational!

MO12: Walk, Run and Kick with my friend and gun football team mate, Troy, as part of my 30 days of exercise challenge with 30 different blokes in my community. Catching up with Troy, he opened up about the challenges of getting his first job out of Uni and the toll that it’s had on his mental health and the strategies he’s kept in place to remain positive in an otherwise dreary job market. He’s been choosing to focus on incremental wins and how he can get more of those to get more momentum, a true testament to his resilience,

Today I got to learn more about men’s health in India and how low in priority discussion around Mental/men’s health is in certain parts. The mindset of ‘boys don’t cry’ is apparently prevalent where Prerak is from, which was a timely reminder that there’s a lot of work to be done to tackle the men’s health crisis globally.

MO10: Walk and Talk with Tim as part of my 30 day challenge. Not the most flattering pic of the three of us, but it was great to connect and talk about the busyness of life and a recent skill we’ve both been building to seperate the insight from the noise when dealing with problems, which is an approach that keeps work stress low(er) and helps ensuring logic rather than emotion is driving decision making.

While walking and talking, Chris shared about the peaks (getting smiled at and building a report with the little one) and pits (mostly the lack of sleep!) of being a new parent and how it’s been important for him to make time to look after his health, even while being a primary carer to ensure his best self can show up for his young family.

Working in high stakes sports and entertainment roles, where a lot of deliverables fall in a short space of the year, he knows a thing or two about how to keep cool when your backs against the wall and need to get the job done. Beating the rain as best we could, we got a good chat in about the importance of having systems in place to disconnect from work, having hobbies and surrounding yourself with a good community to manage stress when the going gets tough.

A key topic of conversation was the need to be more mindful and intentional about our health as we start to really enter those years where men’s health issues become less uncommon. Both of us have a family history of different ailments, so it was a timely reminder to not take good health for granted and do what we can to keep on top.

It’s pretty unreal to say, but this challenge — and the conversations around mental health and the loads we carry — helped us both open up and learn so much more about each other. Crazy to think two blokes can go through life side by side and still not realise the weight the other is carrying.
That’s exactly why I’m doing this.
