Mental health and suicide prevention

2 months ago I was in the ER with a back injury that left me temporarily unable to walk. Thankfully I was able to get the help I needed and although I still have a ways to go I am very much on the mend. So I’m incredibly relieved to be able to take on a move challenge this Movember, even if it has been altered a little to make it possible. This month I’ll be in the water walking 30kms or 1200 laps of the pool before the end of Movember!

For so many men, getting the help they need, particularly with mental health challenges, seems like an impossible & insurmountable obstacle. It is an incredibly complex and personal challenge. However, in Australia, suicide is the leading cause of premature death in men. According to the ABS, a man who died by suicide lost on average three decades of potential life. Give or take a few years, that is the entire span of my life so far. That’s where my 30kms comes from, I’ll be walking (in the pool) one kilometer to represent each year of life lost by an death due to suicide.

The more you think about these statistics, the more tragic you realize they are. This year in my family those statistics became more than just a number. Seeing the tragedy of loved ones losing a beloved father, husband & friend is something someone should never have to go through, and we simply must do more to stop it happening to others.

I'm doing this for my cousins, my Poppa, my Dad, my uncles, my "brothers", my mates & my colleagues. I'm doing this to send a message to anyone who is struggling, that you do matter, that it's okay not to be okay, to let you know that someone cares and there are people who will help you through your challenges even when they seem insurmountable.

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men's health, and this Movember I'm joining them. Together we can make a difference for men's health – in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Help me stop men dying too young.

You (that is you Lauren AND you collectively Movember) are doing a fabulous job. It has reminded me to keep having those conversations about men's health with the testosterone people in my life. Keep up the great work.

30 Week(s) Ago

The last twelve months have brought the need for Movember into sharper focus for me as our family lost a beautiful soul to a battle with his mental health. The ripple effect of this tragedy will continue to reverberate across his rural community and especially for his wife and four children. While it may be too late for him, if my efforts can do anything to have someone seek help earlier because they feel it’s OK to talk about the darkness they are experiencing, then it will be worth it. I do know there are hundreds of people who would have intervened if had they known the depth of his struggle and known what to do.
