After years of practice runs - with varying degrees of success - this year I'm finally putting down the razor and officially taking part in Movember.
For the longest time I was fortunate to not have been personally affected by issues affecting men's health.
Things changed this year when a few months ago we found out that my dad had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My dad is one of the most resilient people I know, having spent half his life in the navy before retraining as a psychologist where he went on to have a long career in disability services (and now does private consulting work in between taking the dog on adventures to the park). Throughout all of this, the thing that was most surprising to me was the profound mental health impact.
While he is doing much better now - and looking likely to make a full recovery - this story is by no means an isolated incident.
In fact 1 in 6 males in Australia will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 85, and 75% of all suicides in Australia are committed by men.
So for the month of November I will be doing my best Tom Selleck impersonation, and raising funds for people like my dad.
