My motivation

For those who don’t know me all too well, I work in Health and Safety for a coal mine. I have worked in multiple industries, predominantly Mining and Manufacturing in a Health, Safety and Emergency Response capacity. Due to the nature of my roles over the past few years, I have often been one of the key go to people on site for mental health issues as well as management of injuries, non-work and work related. Over this time I have been confided in and heard countless stories, many of which still stand out in my mind today. No matter the day, my door is always open for a chat and I will forever promote prioritising physical and mental wellbeing. It is so important for us all to encourage open conversations about mental health. By talking and listening you can potentially create an opportunity to encourage someone to seek help if needed. Everyone experiences mental health issues at some time in their lives, and it is vital not to underestimate the importance of just being there for someone.

Last year, I participated in an event focused on mental health and suicide awareness that truly had a huge effect on me regarding how I manage my own mental wellbeing but also ways I can have an impact on others around me, in my personal life, my workplace and my community. As part of this event, we were all tasked to send a simple text message to someone in our lives reading: “I love you and I miss you. Talk soon.” It is a very simple, 5 second message that yet somehow can be so easily put on the back burner although can have a major positive impact on the person who receives it. I challenge everyone reading this to send a similar message to someone in their lives.

More funding, research and methods of early detection of cancers are needed and that no one, male or female, even the healthiest amongst us, is immune. But we can do something about it. We can raise awareness, donate to the cause, and get the word out as a reminder to our friends, family and our communities.

The suicide rates, men in particular, in Australia are extremely alarming and I truly wish it was talked about more so we could take better action.

So, Patrick (The Snag) and I are raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the fathers, brothers, sons and mates in our lives by taking on the challenge to walk/run 60km for the month! (There may also be some paddle boarding too… Patrick is water obsessed although he makes it 10 times harder for me paddling lol). Please donate or simply follow along and share to support men's health!

In this month, I also encourage everyone to visit the Movember website and immerse themselves in the key messages the campaign aims to achieve.

Day 8 - Bit of a shorter walk today, took a moment to stop where this fellow camp village resident let me sit with her for a while and see her new little bub (that is conveniently hidden away in this picture haha).

Day 7 of my Movember challenge consisted of a walk around the work accomodation camp village just after sunset.

These walks are often a chance for me to unwind and reflect on my day after a long shift and after a full day talking about emergency response which included addressing potential psychological stress in the workplace, the aim to increase mental health awareness as a part of Movember was at the forefront of my mind.

It’s so important we start talking openly about mental health. Having honest conversations helps break stigma, increase understanding, and support each other in building stronger, healthier minds. It's time to prioritise well-being, together.
