Mental health and suicide prevention

When I reflect on my journey with Men's health, I realise it's deeply woven into my entire life story. My dear dad died by suicide when I was 11 years old, shaping my formative years in ways I'm still unpacking. In my 20's, I saw firsthand how an unwell man led to poor mental health, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and suicide attempts and the devastating affects on our family. I was by his side navigating a support system that quite frankly fell short. I've also seen mates struggle with their mental health in unexpected places - on the fire ground with my rural brigade, in the office, at the pub over a few beers or on a bushwalk. These conversations have helped me realise how important it is to follow up when you ask 'are you okay?'.

What I love about Movember is how it turns deeply personal experiences into passion projects, and it creates and holds a space where the heavy topics can be discussed with some humour and fun, in a safe and accessible way. So that's what I'm doing this Movember, with my good mate and long time Mo-sista Lauren, we are creating awareness and raising funds for men's health doing what we love. We are hiking from the North to the South of lutruwita/Tasmania - with a bit of humour and a lot of heart.
