My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Mental health and suicide prevention

15 years ago, I became a Mo Bro and it was just purely to grow (at the time) a pretty average moustache. Now, its pretty bloody epic!! I was never actively involved in fundraising and raising awareness for what Movember stands for but over the years as I grew more as a human being, my attitude towards helping people and raising awareness changed.

In 2019 I created a campaign called run30formovember. I ran 465 kms in 30 days, so on day 1 I ran 1km. Day 2 I ran 2kms, day 3 it was 3, day 4 it was 4 and so on until day 30. Not only was it physically tough but also mentally.

in 2023, I took on my most epic challenge as I rode my push bike down to Brisbane from Cairns in 15 days. Not only was it a physically and emotionally challenging one, it was a dangerous one as well. Anyone who has driven the Bruce Highway can understand the dangerous conditions of that road. There were days when I really had to take stock of what I was doing. I had to focus on the moments when I wanted to give up (there was more than one of those days) and take control of my emotions and get through one day at a time. I have raced in Triathlons and running events for the past 10/11 years both locally and internationally, but this was on a totally different level.

So, in 2024 I am going back to my original campaign. I will be running 465kms again in 30 days and I would love everyone to join in, no matter where you are in the world. While this starts off easy, it increasingly gets harder and harder. Having the support from your family and friends will help you complete this monumental campaign.

I get plenty of looks when people see my pink and moustache and there is a perfectly good reason for that. Back in 2018, I started to colour my moustache for the last of Movember and this was to say a massive thankyou to all the Mo Sista's who have supported me over the years (and there are a lot of them !!) but it also helps raise awareness for Breast Cancer. I know a lot of women (and men) who have experienced what its like to live with someone who has had breast cancer before. Its a terrible illness that can impact people its lots of different ways. So about 3 years ago, I made the decision to have my hair and moustache pink all year round. Nothing will ever make me change the way that I look. Its the least I can do.

2022 has opened how I best represent myself and how comfortable I am in my own skin. Whether that’s growing my hair back or colouring my Mo. What I do know is that Movember is not just about me. It’s about the lives of all the men out there, young or old. It’s about raising awareness and doing something about it. It’s about making a difference and helping anybody that needs it and its about making a difference in my own life.

As a father of two adult sons, I want them to be able to reach out and express their feelings, express their emotions and not being afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

There is one thing that I have learnt over the last few years, no matter who you are or what you do, just be yourself. If you want to change yourself and become a better person for it, then do it. Do not let negativity influence your decision to make something of yourself, no matter what you do.
