Hello my friends near and far, I’m taking part in Movember this year. I have not done this in a long while so figured it was about time I tried to help out.

My personal story is that my Dad was told about 20 years ago he had prostate cancer. Early detection and a brave decision by him saved his life. I remember how I was feeling at that time like it was yesterday. I love the way Movember has raised so much awareness of prostate cancer - back then nobody had really heard of it - but now it’s much more commonly understood and these guys have had a lot to do with that.

In recent times I’ve also had several mates really struggling with mental health issues, a lot closer to home than I ever expected. I genuinely do think they have spoken out and asked for help because of the awareness raised by groups like Movember. I too had many struggles when my grandmother passed away and the covid restrictions and logistical mistakes by government bodies meant I was unable to say goodbye nor make her funeral, dark days indeed. Throw in unrelenting home-schooling of a kid in his first years of formal education and a roaming 2 year old and times were far from easy. But, our family stuck together, worked together and made it as fun as we possibly could. With the support from amazing friends we’ve been able to get through it, still strong and still happy.

Spending the best part of two years in lockdown does give one a lot of time to think about a lot of things, and one outcome from that for me personally is trying to do more for others. So, this is a small way I can try to do exactly that.

If anyone has any spare pennies to throw at my fundraising page it would be really appreciated. I shall be growing a “relaxed handlebar” and also attempting to run 135kms for the month.

I’ll post regular updates to my Movember page as my new furry friend grows.

This one’s for you Gran. On what would have been your 100th birthday, my 100th km goes down. There’s a hole that will never be filled. Gone, but never, ever forgotten.

Miss you Gran....

Hmm, the end of day 1 and there is a dark shadow already...looks like tomorrow will be the beginning of a new friendship.
