Our Motivation

This is a network established for all Healthcare professionals and staff across Australia. Established by the team at Healthe Care Australia and proudly led by our team captain, Craig Sumpner-Johnston, "The blue mo' of Mayo". We're challenging our Healthcare colleagues across Australia to Grow and Move for Men's Health this Movember.

Here's Craig's story…

Craig is Nursing Unit Manager of Renal Dialysis and Intensive Care Units at Mayo Private Hospital. He has cared for a lot of men over his 25 years as a registered nurse and many of them have suffered and died from possibly preventable diseases. Men tend to be stoic and to keep health issues to themselves until they are so serious or so obvious they are hard to hide.

This year, a couple of tragic events have caused Craig to take his Movember participation up a notch…

The son of a friend of his committed suicide with devastating impacts on the family and the local community. Craig had no idea what they were going through and, with six children himself including four boys, he resolved to make sure all of his family are comfortable talking about their health and seeking help when needed.

Craig also nursed a colleague who died from prostate cancer just as his uncle had done a few years ago. He wished he could have done more to help and he realised the best course of action is to raise awareness and get men to seek intervention early.

In response, Craig has set an ambitious $5,000 fundraising target for himself, he has also resolved to dye this year's mo' blue and he has taken on the role of Healthe Care Australia team captain.

Why the blue mo'? Craig says, "Blue is the international colour of men's health just like pink represents women's health and breast cancer. A blue mo' will not only stand out even more than my usual Movember moustache, but it will give me the opportunity talk about Beyond Blue, a wonderful organisation that helps people cope with depression and anxiety, and a major beneficiary of Movember funding."

So what are you waiting for, put down the razor and get growing in support of Men's Health this Movember!
