We work closely with our global men's health partners to ensure collaboration, transparency and accountability for every project we fund. We monitor this through report cards which detail what we seek to achieve, key measures and the impact.
Prostate Cancer
"Together with the brightest minds in research, we aim to achieve significant breakthroughs in the hope of beating prostate cancer. Our disruptive funding approach identifies revolutionary ways to accelerate health outcomes by creating strong, global collaborative teams." Dr. Colleen Nelson, Global Scientific Chair.
Men's Health
"One Mo can help change the face of men’s health through the powerful conversations created globally during Movember. Men have the chance to confidently discuss men’s health with people around them, resulting in men taking action early, helping change and save lives." Paul Villanti, Executive Director, Programs
Mental health and suicide prevention
“The number of men taking their own lives around the world is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Movember is working to ensure all men and boys look after their mental health and are comfortable to seek help when they’re struggling.”
Brendan Maher, Global Director, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
Testicular Cancer
“Despite being the 2nd most common cancer in young men, testicular cancer is often a forgotten cancer due to early detection and treatment. Our projects look at underinvested areas such as improving access to healthcare services and treatment options for relapse” Paul Villanti, Executive Director, Programs.

About the project

This program funds translational research which has real potential to make the leap from bench to bedside, focusing on the following strategic aims:

  • Identifying men at high risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer
  • Distinguishing aggressive from non-aggressive prostate cancer
  • Developing new, targeted treatments for advanced disease
This style of research award seeks to build on previously funded early discovery research. The aim is to ensure that promising results are translated onto the next step in the series of steps that will be needed to deliver real life, tangible treatments and diagnostic tools that will make a difference to men with prostate cancer.

The first call for research of this type was issued in 2014 and was very successful, attracting strong, high impact research proposals. In light of the success of this scheme, we repeated the call in 2015 but in a slightly more targeted way, focusing on translation of biomarkers that show the potential to improve diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

All applications to our Translational Research Award Schemes have been assessed using Prostate Cancer UK’s rigorous and transparent assessment process to ensure that only the very best research was funded. That process involved significant input from independent experts through peer review, review by PCUK’s lay advisors, and detailed review and discussion of all applications by our PCUK’s Research Advisory Committee. Prostate Cancer UK’s process for making research awards was recently awarded the AMRC kitemark providing external validation that our process is transparent, independent and effective.
