On Sunday 21st May 2023, thousands of dapper gentlefolk will ride their classic and vintage style motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men’s mental health and prostate cancer research.

Earlier this year in preparation for the 2023 Melbourne Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, some of our Movember team organised a pop-up activation at the Pentridge Coburg vintage markets. Surrounded by an array of vintage bikes and a car or two, the Movember crew informed and struck up conversations with the local community about the upcoming Melbourne ride.

The wonderful warm weather attracted motorcycle enthusiasts to a meaningful cause and provided the opportunity to speak with a few very passionate riders about why they ride for DGR. We caught up with riders Dave, Greg and Sidney to gain insight into their experiences and motivations behind participating in this renowned event.

Dave’s Story

Dave, a long-time participant, initially joined DGR by chance in 2012 and instantly fell in love with its inclusive nature and positive atmosphere. Over the years, his involvement deepened, eventually leading him to become a lead organiser. Dave's personal journey and his desire to spread happiness drive his continued participation.

Greg’s Story

For Greg, DGR represents a mental health project close to his heart. He sees it as a stepping-stone to overcoming personal challenges, building and riding motorcycles as part of the process. The camaraderie among friends and the impressive showcase of bikes keeps Greg coming back for more, year after year.

Sidney’s Story

Sidney, who joined DGR for the first time last year, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about men's health issues and encouraging men to speak out. Inspired by his first experience, Sidney purchased a café racer motorcycle specifically for this year's ride. Networking, having a fun time, and contributing to fundraising programs are among his motivations for participating again.

Memorable moments from past rides were shared between riders and marketgoers throughout the day. Dave recalled the gratification of becoming an organiser for the event and receiving appreciation from participants after a successful year. For Greg, the highlight was dressing up in dapper suits with friends and enjoying the unique atmosphere. Sidney's fondest memory was witnessing the impressive sight of hundreds of vehicles parading through Melbourne's streets while contributing to a worthy cause.

The activation at Pentridge Coburg exemplified the power of community and a shared passion for motorcycles. Participants like Dave, Greg, and Sidney embody the spirit of the event, contributing to the awareness of men's health issues and making a positive impact in their own unique ways.
