Mental health and suicide prevention

Comparing anything to a roller coaster ride seems like a tired metaphor. However, when it comes to my journey with mental health, it is the most accurate description. In my 20s, imposter syndrome led to anxiety, which led to rapid weight gain, which led to panic attacks, which led to my career going nowhere. I finally took the bull by the horns (more tired metaphors) and spoke to someone.

I was fortunate to have loving friends who put me in contact with a therapist. Thankfully, that therapist was the perfect match for me (not all of them are). Over three years, we faced all my demons (demons being myself) head-on. I came out of that experience totally in love with myself—not in a conceited way, but more that I no longer felt scared about life, the unknown, and the power of learning. I felt like I had found the secret sauce.

Fast forward over a decade later, and I find myself emerging from another black hole of stress, anxiety, and depression. The COVID years hit me like a ton of bricks (they keep coming), and the state of the world had left me broken. Not to mention the sudden loss of my sister and a dreaded midlife existential crisis. The strange part is that I felt like I did not deserve to feel the way I did this time. Ridiculous, right?

I have worked hard to turn a corner on that thinking. Especially when I have seen friends (men and women) and family struggle with their demons and even take their own lives. Also, I saw my sister battle demons that ruined her health over time. Sadly, by the time she turned her mental health around, her physical health had lost the war. I have no words left for the tragedy I feel over losing her.

Mental health is a journey we must tread carefully over our lives. Just like my many tired metaphors, it sticks to us like glue. No one is ever "cured" of anxiety or depression because they are not sick. There is nothing wrong with having moments of weakness with mental health, and it happens to everyone. You CAN do something about it. That is why I am growing my MO this MOVEMBER and raising money towards all the fabulous support services in this space.

Please donate. Also, ensure you care for yourself and the ones you love.
